The objective of this proposal is to validate (TRL4) an innovative high-resolution muon tomographic method based on the simultaneous measurement of the muon trajectory and its momentum (4D tomography) for monitoring the structural integrity of large infrastructures.
This tomographic concept is the result of the combination of Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) detection technology and advanced Deep Learning (DL) imaging algorithms. The two techniques underlying this concept have been developed in the context of the project “Participation in the LHC CMS experiment: Run2 and high-luminosity upgrade (FPA2017-85155)”, funded by the Spanish Research Agency (AEI).
Muon scattering radiography” (MSR) or “muon tomography” is a technique based on the measurement of the trajectory of muons before and after passing through the object under study that allows reconstructing images of the geometry and composition of the target object. This technique requires the use of two multilayer detectors, one located before the target (pre-target detector) and one located after the target (post-target detector).
MSR is frequently used in non-destructive testing applications such as preventive maintenance of industrial equipment, nuclear, port and border security, and others. This project will introduce a new method and technique to overcome the resolution limit of current muon tomography. In addition to its trajectory, the muon momentum will be determined by measuring the time of flight between the pre-target and post-target detectors.
This proposal is a coordinated project developed through three subprojects each led by groups from IMB-CNM, IFCA and ITAINNOVA. The participating groups bring complementary experiences. The IMB-CNM group will carry out the design and manufacture of the sensor for this proposal.
The IFCA group contributes to the production of the ETL sensor modules.
And finally, the ITAINNOVA group will carry out the development of a clock distribution system.
extremely stable and powerful to be able to operate and synchronize the detectors for accurate measurement of muon flight times.
