Ammonia emission control

AMMONIA 4.0 “Digital twin for the integrated management of ammonia emissions in pig farms”.
Compliance with current and forthcoming legislation regarding air quality significantly limits the ammonia emissions allowed for pig farms (16% reduction by 2030), which implies the need to implement emission reduction technologies.

Problem

The overall objective of the project is to adopt and exploit digitalization technologies for risk minimization in decision making on the adoption, implementation and operation of technology for the control and minimization of ammonia emissions in pig farms.
The activities to be carried out to achieve the general objective of the project are planned in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Virtual sensing. Development of augmented sensors combining information from physical sensor networks with virtual sensors developed from detailed 3D fluid dynamic simulations considering the farm geometry. This will allow detailed assessment of ammonia emissions within the vessels.
  • Phase 2: Prototyping in simulated environment. Prototyping and performance evaluation in simulated environment of the best available techniques, their combination and geographical adaptation for the minimization of ammonia emissions.
  • Phase 3: Digital twin for operations management. Digitization of operations for optimal control of ammonia emissions at the farm during farm operation.

Results

AMMONIA_4.0 is a project that aims to collaborate in the reduction of ammonia emissions dictated by current legislation. The objective of the project is to exploit digitalization technologies for risk minimization in decision making on the adoption, implementation and operation of technology for the control and minimization of ammonia emissions in pig farms.
To date, work has been carried out on the digital twin for the integrated management of ammonia emissions in pig farms. Phase 1 – Virtual Sensorization”, led by the Spanish Pig Producers Cluster (i+Porc), with the participation of four other entities from different fields: the Technological Institute of Aragon (ITAINNOVA); Nabladot, a company specialized in fluid simulation; Exafan, a specialist in construction and climate control on farms, and the integrator company Vall Companys.
